Imagine the light in your office is overhead, you’re sitting at a desk, you slide forward to get to work, and your shadow immediately blocks your project. Working under overhead lights both can cause eye strain and cast shadows in the least-opportune places, which might sound familiar to many a project manager, student, and professional.
HERE’S THE FIX:

- If the lighting isn’t home-improvement-project-worthy, keep it simple with floor lamps. With the right lampshade length, color, and funnel shape, this will diffuse and redirect harsh light from the fixture and help to fill in those lighting deficits around waist height around the room.

- One of our favorite options are set-in fixtures, like LED crown moulding strips to bounce light off the ceiling and gradually fill the room. Simply stick them onto a ledge near the ceiling and observe how “bounce light” works to create an all-around well-lit feeling while still seeming less harsh than direct lighting.

- For you task-oriented types, try using recessed lighting on a gimbal to direct your attention to the problem at hand. The best part of one like this is that wherever you need the light, the gimbal gives you fluid motion and control of the fixture, so you can shine it where you need to start your task. (PROTIP: This method also works well for garages and workbenches where Dad needs you to “hold the light…hold it where I’m pointing–no, where I’m pointing, just hold the ligh–I’ll do it”.)

- To avoid contrast and glare, consider our panel lighting with a dimmable driver as a wall option instead of an overhead option; light that comes in from the sides of a room and has surfaces to bounce off of can make the difference between straining to see things at desk-level, and comfortably working without hunching and squinting.
